July 31- Arrived back at Camp Chaffee at 8:30
this morning. The ride from New York to St.
Louis was not bad- we had an air-cooled car but
from St. Louis here the heat was terrific.
One of the fellows said I was made Private First
Class while I was on furlough.
Aug. 2- Well I got my one stripe so Im a P.S.C.
now. It took an hour to sew it on and I still have
plenty more to do.
Off with the furlough

Aug. 8- We were out on a two day bivouack
Tuesday and Wednesday. We drove
seventy-five miles on Tuesday and I drove all
the way. On Wednesday our Lieutenant used
my tank for the lead and we drove another
twenty seven miles. I must have done o.k.
because the staff sergeant said I was going to
be his tank driver- looks like I wont be a radio
operator after all.
